New Pope Announced
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, became the first American pope on May 8. Born in Chicago, he studied theology and rose through Church ranks, becoming a cardinal in 2024.
Trump’s Reaction
Donald Trump praised the new pope on Truth Social:
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost… What a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV.”
But Old Posts Resurface
Despite Trump’s praise, Pope Leo XIV has previously shared strong criticisms of Trump-era policies. In one reposted tweet, he quoted:
“Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed?”
Another post read:
“There is nothing remotely Christian… about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages.”
Ongoing Criticism
Leo also reshared critiques of JD Vance and reposted a 2015 article titled:
“Why Donald Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric is so problematic.”
Conclusion
Trump may celebrate the new pope, but Leo’s past posts suggest deep disagreement with his administration’s values.
