Everything we know so far after nightclub roof collapse leaves over 100 people dead including former MLB players

A tragic roof collapse at Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has left at least 124 people dead and over 255 injured. The collapse happened about an hour into a concert by singer Rubby Pérez, who was among the victims. Videos show the crowd trying to flee as the roof came down.

Victims Identified

Among the deceased are MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, saxophonist Luis Solis, and the president of AFP Popular Bank. “We’re going to search tirelessly for people,” said Emergency Operations Director Juan Manuel Méndez. Only 54 victims have been identified so far.

Mourning and Support

President Luis Abinader declared three days of mourning, saying, “We deeply regret the tragedy… Our prayers are with the affected families.” Senator Marco Rubio added, “The U.S. stands ready to support our Dominican allies.”

Grief and Investigation

Jet Set’s statement read: “There are no words to express the pain this event has caused.” An investigation is underway to determine the cause as rescue efforts continue.
