Nicolas Cage gained 25 pounds with pasta and bread to play John Madden

Nicolas Cage has detailed the “pretty brutal” physical work behind his turn as NFL legend John Madden — and it started with pasta, not a crash diet in reverse.

In interviews with People and Extra, Cage said he put on roughly 25 pounds by leaning into foods he enjoys, including pasta and sourdough bread, while keeping elements of his usual routine such as protein shakes and a lighter daily meal. Makeup artist Adrien Morot then added further bulk with prosthetics, creating a hybrid look rather than asking Cage to gain the full screen weight himself.

Cage has been candid that shedding the real pounds afterward is harder than putting them on, describing long sessions on the elliptical as part of the comedown.

Why the hybrid approach

Modern biopic makeup often splits the difference between actor transformation and silicone. Cage’s comments suggest the production wanted Madden’s silhouette without pushing an actor in his sixties into an extreme and potentially unsafe weight gain. The “brutal” part, in his telling, is less the carbs than the recovery.

Entertainment sites including UNILAD amplified the quotes because Cage rarely discusses process in such practical terms. Fans used to his wilder roles heard a craftsman talking shop: how much body, how much foam, how much willpower later.

Madden on screen

John Madden remains one of American sports’ most recognizable figures — coach, broadcaster, and namesake of a video-game empire. Casting Cage promised eccentricity meeting everyman. The weight talk is early marketing, but it also sets expectations: this will be a physical performance, not only a vocal impression.

Cage’s message is straightforward. He ate the bread, wore the appliances, and is now paying the fitness bill. Whether audiences buy the illusion will wait for the finished film.

Cage has long treated physical change as part of the job, from extreme weight shifts in earlier dramas to the stylized looks of his genre films. The Madden process stands out because he quantified it so clearly: about 25 pounds of real gain, roughly another 30 suggested through prosthetics in some coverage of Morot’s work, and a recovery plan that sounds closer to training camp than spa week.

Football fans will judge the performance on whether Cage captures Madden’s cadence, humor and larger-than-life presence — not only the waistline. The early interviews are designed to show commitment. They also humanize a star often discussed as eccentric: here he is talking about sourdough and cardio like any actor mid-transform.

When the film arrives, expect before-and-after photos to dominate social feeds. Cage has already written the caption. He enjoyed the pasta. The elliptical is collecting its debt.
