AT&T $177m data breach settlement: when payments could arrive
If you were an AT&T customer caught up in the company’s 2024 data breaches, you may be wondering when your settlement money will arrive. Here is what we know.
The settlement in brief
AT&T agreed to pay $177 million to settle lawsuits over two data breaches in 2024. The money is split into two parts:
- $149 million for the breach announced in March 2024
- $28 million for the breach announced in July 2024, which was linked to the cloud data company Snowflake
The deal covers about 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former customers. AT&T denies any wrongdoing.
The two breaches were separate incidents, which is why the money is divided into two parts with different payment rules.
Final approval is in
A judge gave the settlement final approval on Friday, 2 October 2026. That was an important step, but it does not mean payments start straight away.
The likely timeline
There is a window for anyone to appeal the decision. That deadline is 2 November.
If no appeal is filed, the settlement is expected to become effective on or around 12 November. Under the agreement, payments should then be made within 60 days.
That means money could arrive in December or early in 2027. However, no official payment date has been announced yet, so it is best to treat these dates as estimates.
If someone does appeal, the process could be delayed for months.
How much could you get?
The amount depends on which breach affected you and whether you lost money because of it.
People who can show documented losses can claim up to $5,000 under the first group, or up to $2,500 under the second. Those affected by both breaches can receive up to $7,500 in total.
Other eligible claimants will receive a share of the money that remains once those claims and costs are paid.
The deadline to file a claim has now passed, so only people who already claimed will be paid.
Watch out for scams
Settlements like this often attract fraudsters. Here are some simple tips:
- Real emails about the settlement come from attsettlement@e.emailksa.com
- Never give your bank details in reply to an unexpected call or text
- Check information on the official settlement website, telecomdatasettlement.com
- If in doubt, call the official helpline on 833-890-4930
If you have moved house or changed your email address since you filed, update your details through the official settlement website so your payment can reach you.
The bottom line
If you filed a claim, there is nothing more you need to do right now. Keep an eye on your email and the official website, be patient, and be wary of anyone who asks you for money or passwords to “speed up” a payment.
