Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 23-year Portugal career that rewrote the record books.

In an Instagram video posted on November 5, the 41-year-old said it was time to “hand back the number seven shirt” of the national team. According to BBC Sport, Ronaldo finishes with 234 caps and 146 goals — both men’s world records — since his debut in 2003.

“Today the time has come to pass it on to the future,” he said, adding that some decisions are made with the heart as well as the mind. He thanked Portuguese supporters for a journey that began when he was a boy in Madeira chasing a ball.

Fallout with the coach, then farewell

The announcement followed a public clash with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo walked out of the national camp in September after being told he would not start a Nations League match against Denmark, according to ESPN. The Portuguese Football Federation fined him and imposed a 30-day suspension.

His last appearance for Portugal was a September 24 Nations League win over Wales. He was an unused substitute against Norway earlier in the window — his first unused sub in a competitive Portugal match since 2008, ESPN noted.

AP News reported that the federation plans a formal tribute and that Ronaldo will continue at club level with Saudi side Al-Nassr.

What he leaves behind

Ronaldo captained Portugal to Euro 2016 glory and helped win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025. He appeared in a record six European Championships and six World Cups, becoming the only player to score in six different World Cup tournaments. A World Cup title, however, remained out of reach after Portugal’s round-of-16 exit this summer.

For a generation of fans, the number seven shirt and the Madeira-to-Madrid-to-Turin-to-Riyadh arc defined modern international football. Club football continues. The Portugal chapter, by his own word, is closed.

Ronaldo’s club future remains separate from the international goodbye. He is chasing a landmark 1,000 career goals and sits close to that mark with Al-Nassr. Portugal’s federation said it will not let the farewell pass without a proper tribute, even as coach Jorge Jesus prepares a Nations League squad without him for upcoming fixtures against Denmark and Wales.

The timing — one day before a squad announcement — left little ambiguity. After months of tension over minutes and respect, the player who defined a Portuguese generation chose exit over another uneasy camp. Teammates who grew up watching him now inherit the shirt he said never belonged to him alone.

Historians of the game will argue forever about his place beside Lionel Messi. The numbers for Portugal are settled: 234 caps, 146 goals, European champion, Nations League winner, six World Cups. What comes next is club football only — and a country adjusting to life without number seven.
