Sir Tom Jones feared his life was over after hospital stay in Los Angeles

Sir Tom Jones has told fans he thought his life was ending after a sudden illness forced him into hospital in Los Angeles, before he returned to the stage this week.
Speaking at the Greek Theatre on Wednesday night, the 86-year-old Welsh singer said a bout he first described as flu became serious enough that he was taken by paramedics to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. According to BBC News, he spent about a week in hospital and told the crowd he briefly believed the end had come.
“Oh well, this is it, you’ve had a wonderful life, Tommy, but it’s over right now,” he recalled thinking, before praising the UCLA staff who treated him.
From postponed dates to a full house
Jones had already postponed Los Angeles and San Diego shows in late October on medical advice. Some California dates were later shifted again as doctors ordered more rest. People reported that he pushed to recover specifically so he could perform again, telling clinicians he needed to get back on stage because that is where he belongs.
Some coverage, including reports cited by entertainment outlets, described pneumonia developing after the initial flu-like illness. Jones himself framed the scare in plain terms for the audience: he could not breathe, paramedics were called, and he spent days in intensive care before improving.
The singer’s next scheduled stop after the Greek Theatre appearance was the Yaamava’ Theater in Highland, California, continuing a U.S. run that had been interrupted by the illness.
A long career, still on the road
Jones has sold millions of records across more than six decades, with hits including “It’s Not Unusual” and “Delilah.” He was knighted in 2006 and spent years as a coach on ITV’s The Voice UK. He recently said the network had decided to end his role on the panel after mentoring Welsh singer Cate McHugh to victory in his final series.
For fans who watched him walk back under the lights so soon after hospital, the message was less about nostalgia than stamina. An 86-year-old star who feared the worst is again choosing the stage — and telling the story in his own words so audiences know how close the tour came to stopping.
