The 1978 classic musical Grease is facing criticism from modern audiences who label it “sexist,” “misogynistic,” and “problematic.” While the film remains a beloved cult classic, recent viewers argue that some of its content does not hold up today.
On social media, fans have shared their concerns. One person wrote, “Sorry, I loved Grease when I was a kid, however, it’s just too problematic these days.” Another added, “It’s misogynistic, homophobic, and just a gross culture of toxic masculinity, r*** culture, and p****hilia.” A specific issue mentioned is the song lyric, “Did she put up a fight?” which many find troubling. Others point to inappropriate behavior from male characters and the film’s lack of diversity.
Despite criticism, some defend the film, including Olivia Newton-John. In a 2020 interview, she said, “It’s a movie. It’s a story from the 50s where things were different… It was a fun love story.” While opinions vary, Grease remains a significant part of pop culture history.
